Choosing a Deck Stain with a Toner

As you have probably noticed, a deck stain can come in a variety of colors and tones. This may sound more like paint but it is possible to add pigment or toner to a stain to give it a shade or color. Depending on the amount of shade the color can be just a light shade. Some normal tones of deck stain are cedar-tone, honey gold, pecan, brown, or redwood. A quality oil based semi transparent deck stain with toner added to it can give a deck a very elegant and beautiful appearance. Even though the deck stain is a tone or color, the wood grain still shows though with semi transparent stains. It would not show through a solid stain that is heavily pigmented. Most people like the semi transparent stains because it still gives a natural wood deck look but has enough pigment in it to give adequate sun protection. The sun’s UV rays are what can turn wood fibers gray and make a deck unsightly. You need to choose a deck stain with some amount of pigment in it for sun protection. For example, a clear decks stain would not give any sun protection at all. A clear deck stain would provide moisture and water protection but would not give sun protection at all. Choosing a deck stain is a little be easier when you understand how they work and if you know which types and colors are the most popular. Semi transparent deck stains with a toner in them normally a natural yellow or gold color like the are the most popular choice for both homeowners and contractors alike.
