Some Information About Fish Tank Heaters
Most aquarium fish like to have warm water to live in. Fish can’t retain their own body temperature like mammals do. They need to have the water at a warmer temperature than room temperature, especially tropical fish. This is why you need to have fish tank heaters to keep the water at the right temperature. You can lose your fish if the water is too hot, or too cold, which costs you money.
There are several kinds of fish tank heaters that you can get, depending on what kind of aquarium setup you have and what you prefer. One kind is the immersible or hanging heater. This heater you hang from the back of your tank. This kind of heater has a control that must stay above the level of the water, so it can be problematic at times. These heaters also tend to be at the lower end of the price scale. Then there are the submersible heaters.
Submersible heaters come in a couple of different types and are more expensive. The whole unit is sealed, which means it can go totally underwater. You can also get one of these heaters which will go under the gravel or other substrate at the bottom of your aquarium. These heaters are stable and give more uniform heat than other kinds of heaters. You can also find smart heaters that are submersible. A smart heater works like a furnace in your house. You set it for a specific temperature and turn it on. When the heater senses that the water is too cold, it will heat up until the water is at the temperature that you want.
The smart fish tank heaters give the best overall heat for your tank. But, no matter what heater you have, you should also make sure that you have a thermometer in the tank. You can get one that sticks to the side like a sticker, or one that is actually in the water on the inside of the tank. But, you need to have an aquarium thermometer so that you know that the heater is working correctly.
