How To Prepare For Bringing Home A New Puppy
Be ready to make some major adjustments the first week with your new family member. First, get organized and fully puppy-proof your home, as you would if you were expecting a toddler to come for a visit, because pups are a lot like children, curious and in to everything.
The holidays or other special occasions are not a good time to bring home a new puppy. These times are filled with enough activities. If possible, wait until after your house has settled down to normal routines. This will make your pups transition less stressful, as he will be entering strange surroundings.
Before bringing home puppy decide on a name, and make sure everyone begins using his name each time they interact with him. This will teach him to pay attention when you call him, which will make training easier later on.
Make sure to pay a visit to your vet for a wellness check and mandatory immunizations, and pick up a well fitted collar and name tag so your pup may be returned to you should he become lost.
Keep your pups needs in mind- be sure young children are taught how to be gentle, if this is your first very young dog, and supervise as necessary. Children can get over excited around cute little animals.
When feeding your pet, try to have the same kibble he was eating before. This will prevent digestion upsets. If you will be changing his food, do so gradually. If he has a difficult time, moistening the food with water should help. Feed him in the same spot to establish a regular routine.
With that out of the way, you can focus on house training your puppy. This should be started right away. If you wait, it will be all the more difficult later on and his transition will not be pleasant for anyone.
Establish yourself as your pups “leader” Dogs are pack animals by nature, and will look to the dominant figure for guidance and discipline. Walk in front of him and eat in his presence before you feed him. This will let him know that you are his pack leader.
Never hit the pup, and if you run across an “accident”, do not scold him, because he will not understand why he is being scolded. Show your disapproval if he is present and say “shame”, but do not look at the dog. He will associate your mood with his “mess”
Introduce your pup to other family pets gradually. Simply plopping him down in front of the cat could cause chaos and injury to both him and the cat. Let them both get used to the idea of each other’s scent and they will take it from there. But supervise until you are sure they will get along.
Above all else, have fun with your new pup. Get the whole family involved in his care, begin house training your puppy right away, and you will have a loyal, obedient companion for years to come.
